How to Choose a Power Amplifier for Loudspeakers

How to Choose a Power Amplifier for Loudspeakers - Power Amplifiers at Shivansh Electronics

A power amplifier takes a line-level signal from a mixer, processor or player and turns it into the high-current signal that drives passive loudspeakers. Matching the amplifier correctly to your loudspeakers protects them, gives clean sound at the levels you need and ensures reliable operation for years. This guide explains how to choose power amplifiers for live sound, installations and hi-fi.

Understand loudspeaker impedance

Every passive loudspeaker has a nominal impedance, commonly 4, 8 or 16 ohms. Amplifier power ratings are given at specific impedances, and an amplifier usually delivers more power into a lower impedance. Connecting loudspeakers in parallel lowers the total impedance: two 8-ohm loudspeakers in parallel form a 4-ohm load. Never connect a load lower than the minimum impedance the amplifier is rated for.

Matching power

Check the loudspeaker's continuous power handling in the manufacturer's data sheet. A common guideline in professional audio is to choose an amplifier able to deliver more power than the loudspeaker's continuous rating, so that peaks are reproduced cleanly without clipping. An underpowered amplifier driven into clipping can be as harmful to loudspeakers as an oversized one used carelessly. Always follow the loudspeaker manufacturer's recommendations and use limiters where available.

Channels and configurations

  • Two-channel amplifiers: stereo pairs of loudspeakers or two separate zones
  • Four-channel and eight-channel amplifiers: several zones or loudspeakers from one rack space, common in installations and multi-way live systems
  • Bridged mode: on many amplifiers, two channels can be combined to drive one loudspeaker with more power; check the minimum bridged impedance

Low impedance or 100 V line

Live sound and many venue systems use low-impedance connections, with a few loudspeakers per channel near the amplifier. Public address and background music systems in offices, schools, hotels and shops often use 100 V line (70 V in some countries), where many loudspeakers with transformers are connected on long cable runs. Many installation amplifiers can drive either low impedance or 100 V line on each channel. See our range of ceiling loudspeakers for distributed systems.

Amplifier technology

Most modern professional amplifiers use Class D output stages, which are highly efficient, run cooler and weigh far less than traditional designs for the same power. Some designs combine different topologies; hi-fi and reference amplifiers may use designs chosen for the lowest distortion and finest detail at home listening levels.

DSP and network control

Many installation and touring amplifiers include DSP with crossovers, equalisation, delay and limiters, which can replace a separate loudspeaker processor. Network control lets installers monitor temperature, load and faults, adjust settings remotely and integrate the amplifier with digital matrices and processors. Some amplifiers include Dante or other network audio inputs.

Protection, cooling and power

  • Protection circuits for short circuits, overheating and DC on the output
  • Fan cooling and airflow direction that suit your rack
  • Rack space required and depth
  • Mains power consumption, especially when several amplifiers share a supply
  • Standby and auto-power functions for installations

Choosing for your application

Live sound

Look for robust two-channel or four-channel amplifiers with enough power for your passive loudspeakers and subwoofers, with DSP presets and limiters for protection.

Installed sound

Multichannel amplifiers with 100 V line capability, network monitoring and efficient Class D design reduce rack space and running costs. For simpler systems, mixer amplifiers combine a mixer and amplifier.

Hi-fi and studio

Reference stereo, dual-mono and monoblock amplifiers drive passive loudspeakers and studio monitors with precision. See also hi-fi amplifiers.

Common mistakes to avoid

Amplifier problems usually come from mismatched loads or poor installation rather than from the amplifier itself.

  • Connecting too many loudspeakers in parallel, taking the load below the amplifier's minimum impedance
  • Mixing 100 V line loudspeakers and low-impedance loudspeakers on the same channel
  • Choosing an amplifier that is too small and driving it into clipping
  • Blocking ventilation in a closed rack, causing thermal protection to cut the sound
  • Using thin cable on long low-impedance runs, wasting power as heat in the cable
  • Switching on the amplifier before the mixer and sources, which can send thumps to the loudspeakers; switch amplifiers on last and off first

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect more than one loudspeaker to a channel?

Yes, within the amplifier's minimum impedance. Two 8-ohm loudspeakers in parallel make 4 ohms, for example.

What is clipping?

Clipping happens when an amplifier is driven beyond its maximum output. It produces distortion and can damage loudspeakers, especially tweeters.

Do I need a powered loudspeaker or an amplifier?

Powered loudspeakers have amplifiers built in. Passive loudspeakers need a separate amplifier.

Can your personnel help me match an amplifier?

Yes. Visit our showroom in Dhakuria, Kolkata, or call +91 89818 07755 or +91 91477 00677.
