AD/DA Converters

AD/DA converters turn analog audio into digital audio and back again. An analog-to-digital (AD) converter takes microphone preamp, console or outboard outputs and turns them into a digital stream for a recorder, DAW or network, while a digital-to-analog (DA) converter feeds monitors, consoles and outboard processing from digital sources. Because every signal in a modern studio or broadcast chain passes through conversion at least twice, the converter has a direct effect on clarity, imaging and headroom.

This category covers dedicated multichannel AD and DA units, combined AD/DA converters, format converters and high-end stereo converters, with connection options such as AES/EBU, ADAT, MADI, Dante and RAVENNA/AES67 depending on the model. They are used to expand the inputs and outputs of an audio interface, to connect analog equipment to a digital console or network, and to give a mastering or mixing room a reference-quality conversion stage.

Types of AD/DA converters

  • Multichannel AD converters for adding analog line inputs to a digital system
  • Multichannel DA converters for feeding analog consoles, summing mixers and monitor systems
  • Combined AD/DA units that handle both directions in one chassis
  • Format and network converters bridging MADI, AES/EBU, ADAT, Dante and AES67
  • Stereo reference converters for mastering and critical listening

Who buys AD/DA converters

Recording studios expanding their channel count, mastering engineers, broadcasters and OB vans, live sound companies connecting stage racks to networks, post-production facilities and installers building networked audio systems all rely on dedicated converters.

What to look for in AD/DA converters

  • Channel count and whether you need AD, DA or both
  • Digital formats and networks that match the rest of your system: AES/EBU, ADAT, MADI, Dante or RAVENNA/AES67
  • Supported sample rates and clocking options, including word clock input and output
  • Analog reference levels and connectors (XLR or D-sub) that suit your patchbay and outboard
  • Remote control and metering options for rack-mounted or remote installations

AD/DA Converters: questions and answers

What does an AD/DA converter do?

An AD (analog-to-digital) converter turns analog audio into a digital signal for a recorder, DAW or network, and a DA (digital-to-analog) converter does the reverse to feed monitors, consoles and outboard. AD/DA units do both.

Why would I add a dedicated converter to my audio interface?

A dedicated converter adds more inputs and outputs, usually over ADAT, AES/EBU, MADI or a network, and can provide a higher-quality conversion stage for critical work such as mastering.

Which digital format should I choose?

Choose the format your other equipment already uses. ADAT carries up to eight channels per optical port at standard sample rates, AES/EBU carries two channels per cable, MADI carries many channels on one cable, and Dante or RAVENNA/AES67 run over Ethernet networks.

Can your personnel help me choose AD/DA converters?

Yes. Our personnel can advise you on AD/DA converters for your application. Call +91 89818 07755 or +91 91477 00677, or visit our showroom in Dhakuria, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Where can I check the specifications before buying?

Every product has a Visual Guide data sheet on its product page with the manufacturer's official specifications, and our personnel can explain how they apply to your setup.
