Product overview
The MANLEY Massive Passive is MANLEY's flagship stereo tube equaliser: organic, musical and unmistakably powerful passive equalisation with all-tube make-up gain.
Since its introduction, the Massive Passive has redefined passive tube equalisation. Hand-built in California, it combines metal-film resistors, film capacitors and hand-wound inductors with all-tube make-up gain stages for unparalleled tonal sculpting in tracking, mixing and mastering. Paired with MANLEY's own M/S matrix it becomes an audio engineer's dream in mid/side mode.

| Frequencies, 22 Hz to 27 kHz | 44 |
| Maximum boost or cut | 20 dB |
| Dynamic range | 123 dB |
Key features
- All-passive tone sculpting: resistors, capacitors and hand-wound inductors only in the EQ path
- Four parallel bands per channel, each switchable to shelf or bell, boost or cut
- 44 overlapping, interleaved frequencies from 22 Hz to 27 kHz (about 1/4-octave spacing)
- Unique BANDWIDTH control that also shapes the shelf curves
- Passive high-pass (22-220 Hz) and low-pass (6-18 kHz) filters plus gain trims
- Vacuum tube make-up gain and line drivers: 2 x 5751, 4 x 6922
- Balanced XLR and 1/4" inputs and outputs; hardwire bypass on the XLR jacks
- MANLEY Power® universal supply, 90-254 V AC (2020 version)
Radical boosts without artefacts, natural cuts without phase smear
From vocals and instruments to full stereo mixes, the Massive Passive delivers huge high-frequency boosts without sibilance and low-end fatness without mud. Its passive topology and vacuum tube amplification make every adjustment feel intuitive and sound transparent.
Passive, parallel, musical
Unlike most EQs with a series filter topology, the Massive Passive runs its four bands in parallel, so broad or extreme boosts cause no internal overload, even with several bands overlapping. A clean tube amplifier stage restores the level after the passive network. The curves interact organically rather than clinically, for a rich, musical sound that enhances tone instead of dissecting it.
Bandwidth instead of Q
BANDWIDTH defines how wide or narrow each curve is: counter-clockwise for broader, smoother curves, clockwise for more focused adjustments. In shelf mode it also changes the shelf shape, introducing a gentle dip or bump near the corner frequency for more musical contouring. Because the filters interact, results feel natural rather than surgical.
Ideal for mid/side work
Smooth yet punchy mid bands without phasy midrange, even when pushed, make the Massive Passive an ideal EQ for M/S mode with any M/S matrix.

MANLEY Massive Passive Stereo EQ: frequently asked questions
What are the main applications?
Tracking, mixing and mastering: tone shaping while recording, broad organic curves on instruments and buses, and subtle tonal balancing of masters. It is equally at home on vocals, acoustic instruments, mix buses and entire masters.
How do I recognise a unit with MANLEY Power®?
Current units have a red illuminated push-button instead of a black rotary power switch, a universal 90-254 V AC input with no voltage selector, and a revised tube complement, PCB layout and power section.
Which tubes does it use?
The current MANLEY Power® version uses 2 x 5751 (gain stages) and 4 x 6922 (output and driver stages). Use the correct retube kit for the serial number: older and newer versions are not interchangeable.
Is there a version for mastering?
Yes. The Massive Passive Stereo EQ Mastering Version has stepped controls for precise recall and high-pass and low-pass filters optimised for mastering.
Where can I buy the MANLEY Massive Passive Stereo EQ in India?
The MANLEY Massive Passive Stereo EQ is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.
Workflow 1: Stereo mix bus
Broad, organic shaping of a full mix.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Stereo bus left / right out | Channel 1 / 2 BALANCED XLR INPUT |
| Channel 1 / 2 BALANCED XLR OUTPUT | Recorder or interface inputs |
Setup
- Engage IN on both channels.
- Set band 1 to SHELF for low-end weight.
- Use band 4 in SHELF for air.
- Match both channels and compare with bypass.
Tip: The parallel bands allow broad boosts without internal overload.
Workflow 2: Mastering
Subtle tonal balancing of a stereo master.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Playback converter | BALANCED XLR INPUTS |
| BALANCED XLR OUTPUTS | Recording converter |
Setup
- Start with small gain settings.
- Use HIGH PASS to remove sub-sonic build-up.
- Remove build-up with a gentle BELL cut.
- Trim GAIN for level-matched comparison.
Tip: The XLR jacks have a hardwire bypass.
Workflow 3: Mid/side processing
Equalising mid and side separately with an M/S matrix.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| M/S matrix mid / side sends | Channel 1 / 2 inputs |
| Channel 1 / 2 outputs | M/S matrix returns |
Setup
- Feed mid to one channel and side to the other.
- Shape the mid with the smooth mid bands.
- Add air or width on the side channel.
- Use HIGH PASS on the side for a solid low end.
Tip: The lack of phasy midrange makes it ideal for M/S.
Workflow 4: Vocal tracking
Enhancing a vocal on the way in.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Mic preamp output | Channel 1 BALANCED XLR INPUT |
| Channel 1 BALANCED XLR OUTPUT | Interface input |
Setup
- Engage IN on channel 1.
- Add a broad high SHELF for presence and air.
- Cut low-mid mud with a BELL.
- Use HIGH PASS to remove rumble.
Tip: Huge high-frequency boosts without sibilance are a Massive Passive hallmark.
Workflow 5: Two mono instruments
Bass on one channel, drums bus on the other.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Bass track | Channel 1 input |
| Drum bus | Channel 2 input |
Setup
- Set each channel independently.
- Add low-end weight to the bass with band 1.
- Shape the drum attack with bands 3 and 4.
- Trim each channel's GAIN.
Tip: Each channel has its own IN switch and gain trim.
Workflow 6: Unbalanced studio equipment
Connecting unbalanced sources and destinations.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Unbalanced source | BALANCED or UNBALANCED INPUT (1/4") |
| UNBALANCED ONLY OUTPUT (1/4") | Unbalanced destination |
Setup
- Connect with 1/4" cables.
- Set the level around +4 dBu nominal.
- Adjust GAIN trim to match levels.
- Equalise as usual.
Tip: The 1/4" bypass switches the EQ and tube circuits.
