Product overview
The MANLEY ELOP®+ is a stereo all-tube electro-optical limiter and compressor: a comprehensive re-engineering of the ELOP® Limiter with added versatility and performance.
Hand-built in California, the ELOP+ uses light-dependent (optical) resistor technology with vacuum tube amplification throughout the signal path to deliver musical, transparent and dynamic control in tracking and mixing sessions. A switchable 3:1 compression ratio joins the classic 10:1 limiting mode, and a side-chain high-pass filter stops low frequencies from pumping. It is a simple box offering great results easily.
| Limit and compress ratios | 10:1 / 3:1 |
| Maximum gain reduction | 22 dB |
| Dynamic range | 118 dB |
| THD+N | 0.004 % |
Key features
- All-tube, Class A audio path: a 5751 for gain and a 6922 White follower output per channel
- Electro-optical gain reduction with a passive light-dependent resistor
- 10:1 limiter and 3:1 compressor ratios
- Side-chain high-pass filter at 80 Hz (150 Hz by internal jumper)
- MANLEY IRON® transformer-coupled balanced XLR inputs; impedance-balanced XLR outputs
- Large illuminated VU meters reading gain reduction or output

Musical gain reduction through optical compression
The ELOP+ uses electro-optical gain reduction: a light-dependent resistor works as a voltage-controlled attenuator in the audio path. This topology achieves smooth, artefact-free compression without the complex harmonic products of other gain-reduction methods. Its inherent attack and release characteristics produce musical dynamic control that integrates naturally, even into busy arrangements.
Enhanced functionality with dual-ratio operation
Building on the original design, the ELOP+ adds a switchable 3:1 compression ratio alongside the classic 10:1 limiting mode, for mix bus processing and gentle dynamic shaping. The side-chain high-pass filter allows frequency-selective triggering, so a kick drum or bass line does not trigger unnecessary gain reduction and the low end stays tight.
California craftsmanship with a premium tube complement
Each ELOP+ is hand-assembled at MANLEY's California facility with 5751 and 6922 dual triodes throughout the signal path, hand-tested and calibrated by MANLEY. Housed in a precision CNC-milled chassis, it combines a proven electro-optical topology with modern construction standards for reliable performance and sonic consistency.

MANLEY Stereo ELOP+ Limiter: frequently asked questions
What makes the ELOP+ special among optical compressors?
Its fully Class A, all-tube signal path from input to output. A passive light-dependent resistor provides smooth, transparent gain reduction with very few active components, for clean, effortless dynamic control.
What is the COMP mode for?
The gentle 3:1 ratio gives subtler, more transparent gain reduction: glue and consistency on a full mix or sub-group, such as drum or vocal buses, raising average loudness and density while preserving natural dynamics and transient detail.
What are the main applications?
Tracking and mixing: vocals, acoustic guitars and bass on individual tracks, and the stereo mix bus or sub-groups in COMP mode. It is also a fine mastering tool, with the side-chain filter keeping a punchy low end.
Is the bypass a hardwire bypass?
No. In bypass the signal still passes through the all-tube audio path and only the limiter is bypassed.
Where can I buy the MANLEY Stereo ELOP+ Limiter in India?
The MANLEY Stereo ELOP+ Limiter is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.
Workflow 1: Vocal levelling while tracking
Smooth, musical control of a vocal on the way in.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Mic preamp output | Channel 1 INPUT (XLR) |
| Channel 1 OUTPUT | Interface line input |
Setup
- Set GAIN to 1 o'clock for unity.
- Select LIMIT (10:1).
- Raise REDUCTION while watching the meter.
- Trim GAIN for the output level.
Tip: Switch the meter to O/P to check the output level.
Workflow 2: Mix bus glue
Gentle compression on a stereo mix.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Stereo bus left / right | Channel 1 / 2 INPUT |
| Channel 1 / 2 OUTPUT | Recorder inputs |
Setup
- Engage LINK.
- Select COMP (3:1) on both channels.
- Aim for a few dB of gain reduction.
- Engage HP SC to stop bass pumping.
Tip: Maximum compression with a +4 dBu signal is 6 dB.
Workflow 3: Bass guitar
Even level for a bass track.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Bass DI or preamp | INPUT |
| OUTPUT | Recorder |
Setup
- Select LIMIT.
- Set REDUCTION for steady level.
- Leave HP SC at FLAT so the low end controls the limiter.
- Adjust GAIN.
Tip: The optical release integrates naturally with busy parts.
Workflow 4: Drum bus
Density on a stereo drum bus without losing transients.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Drum bus outputs | INPUT 1 / 2 |
| OUTPUT 1 / 2 | Mix bus returns |
Setup
- Engage LINK and COMP.
- Engage HP SC so the kick does not over-trigger.
- Set REDUCTION.
- Match the bypassed level with GAIN.
Tip: The side-chain filter is 80 Hz, or 150 Hz by internal jumper.
Workflow 5: Mastering
Subtle glue on a stereo master.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
