Product overview
The MANLEY Variable Mu® Limiter Compressor is the gold standard in tube compression: it has defined professional stereo bus compression since 1994.
This all-tube, transformer-coupled design uses the remote cut-off technique, re-biasing vacuum tubes to achieve gain reduction, for smooth, musical compression that unifies mix elements without audible artefacts. Custom hand-wound MANLEY transformers with nickel laminations and a fully differential signal path give exceptional transparency across a 20 Hz to 25 kHz frequency response.
| Compress, soft knee | 1.5:1 |
| Limit, sharper knee | 4:1 to 20:1 |
| Maximum output, 26 dB headroom | +30 dBu |
| Frequency response ±0.1 dB | 20 Hz‑25 kHz |
Key features
- Remote cut-off (variable-mu) gain reduction in a fully differential, all-tube circuit
- MANLEY input and output transformers with nickel laminations in mu-metal cases
- COMPRESS (1.5:1, soft knee) and LIMIT (4:1 to 20:1) modes
- Variable attack (25-70 ms), five-step recovery (0.2-8 s) and continuously variable threshold
- Side-chain high-pass filter, -3 dB at 100 Hz
- Hardwire bypass, stepped input attenuator and stereo link switch
- Large illuminated gain-reduction meters
- Independently regulated B+ and heater supplies
- T-Bar mod (four 6BA6 variable-gain tubes) standard on modern units
Dual-mode compression for tracking and mastering
COMPRESS mode gives a gentle 1.5:1 ratio with soft-knee characteristics, ideal for adding cohesion and density to stereo buses. LIMIT mode gives ratios from 4:1 to 20:1 with a sharper knee for precise peak control in recording and mastering. Both modes keep the musical character and harmonic integrity of the Variable Mu® sound.
Modern side-chain filters
Continuous refinement over three decades has enhanced the Variable Mu® while preserving its fundamental character. Modern units include a high-pass side-chain filter so that the compression circuit disregards low-frequency content and bass-induced pumping is prevented, together with a hard-wire bypass, stepped input attenuators and illuminated meters.
Three decades of hand-assembled American craftsmanship
Each unit is hand-assembled in California with carefully selected vacuum tubes, custom hand-wound transformers and premium components throughout. With a maximum output of +30 dBu, 26 dB of headroom and a -85 dB noise floor, the Variable Mu® combines technical excellence with highly musical results.

MANLEY Stereo Variable Mu Limiter Compressor: frequently asked questions
What makes the Variable Mu different?
Its compression is achieved by re-biasing the gain of a vacuum tube rather than with a VCA, optical cell or FET. The gain-reduction curve becomes gentler as the signal goes deeper into compression, and the all-tube, all-transformer design gives immense headroom and a distinctly musical glue.
What does the HP SC filter do?
It makes the detector ignore content below 100 Hz, so a kick drum or heavy bass line does not trigger gain reduction and the rest of the mix can be compressed without pumping.
What is the T-Bar mod?
A factory modification that replaces the 5670 variable-gain tube with four 6BA6 tubes for an even smoother limiting curve and more gain. It is standard on all modern Variable Mu units.
Can I use it for tracking individual instruments?
Yes. Beyond the mix bus and mastering, it gives vocals a smooth sheen, bass a solid foundation and tames acoustic guitar dynamics, with a touch of tube warmth.
Where can I buy the MANLEY Stereo Variable Mu Limiter Compressor in India?
The MANLEY Stereo Variable Mu Limiter Compressor is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.
Workflow 1: Stereo mix bus glue
Cohesion and density on a full mix.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Stereo bus left / right | INPUT 1 / 2 (XLR) |
| OUTPUT 1 / 2 | Recorder inputs |
Setup
- Set DUAL INPUT to LINK.
- Select COMPRESS (1.5:1).
- Lower THRESHOLD for gentle reduction.
- Set ATTACK and RECOVERY, then OUTPUT.
Tip: Engage HP SC to stop the low end pumping the mix.
Workflow 2: Mastering peak control
Controlling peaks on a stereo master.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Playback converter | INPUT 1 / 2 |
| OUTPUT 1 / 2 | Recording converter |
Setup
- Link the channels.
- Select LIMIT.
- Set THRESHOLD so only peaks are reduced.
- Compare with the hardwire BYPASS.
Tip: LIMIT has a sharper knee and ratios up to 20:1.
Workflow 3: Vocal tracking
Smooth control of a vocal while recording.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Mic preamp output | INPUT 1 |
| OUTPUT 1 | Interface input |
Setup
- Set DUAL INPUT to SEP.
- Choose COMPRESS.
- Set THRESHOLD and ATTACK for the singer.
- Choose a RECOVERY step.
Tip: Recovery steps: 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 4 and 8 s.
Workflow 4: Bass guitar
A solid, consistent bass foundation.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Bass DI or preamp | INPUT |
| OUTPUT | Recorder |
Setup
- Select LIMIT for firm control.
- Use a slower ATTACK to keep the pick attack.
- Set RECOVERY with the groove.
- Make up level with OUTPUT.
Tip: Leave HP SC off so the bass itself controls the compression.
Workflow 5: Two mono sources
Two different tracks processed independently.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Source A | INPUT 1 |
| Source B | INPUT 2 |
Setup
- Set DUAL INPUT to SEP.
