Product overview
The RME Fireface UCX II is a 40-channel 192 kHz advanced USB audio interface in a half-rack format: 8 analog inputs and outputs, ADAT, AES/EBU, SPDIF, word clock and MIDI, with DURec recording, a colour display and full stand-alone operation.
The front panel holds two mic/line preamps on XLR/TRS combo sockets, two digitally controlled line/instrument inputs, a high-power headphone output, four keys, an encoder and a colour display. At the rear are four balanced line inputs, six balanced line outputs, ADAT I/O, AES/EBU and coaxial SPDIF on a breakout cable, word clock and MIDI. SteadyClock FS, TotalMix FX with DSP effects and Room EQ, DC-coupled outputs for CV/Gate, and Class Compliant mode for iOS and other operating systems complete the package.

DURec: Direct USB Recording
DURec records all inputs and outputs directly to USB thumb drives or hard drives with up to 2 TB capacity via the rear USB port. Recording runs on the internal DSP, independent from a connected computer, turning the Fireface UCX II into what RME calls a stand-alone field recorder and multichannel live player, for example for virtual soundchecks. Each channel can be chosen individually for recording and playback.
Full stand-alone functionality
Four keys, the encoder, the high-resolution colour display and a well thought-out menu give direct access to every function from the front panel. Internal memory stores six complete states of the unit, so the Fireface UCX II can work without a computer and change role at the click of a button. TotalMix FX can also be controlled via MIDI.
TotalMix FX and Room EQ
The TotalMix FX DSP mixer creates multiple latency-free monitor mixes, in RME's words, with EQ, dynamics, reverb and delay for every output, including main monitors and headphone mixes. Room EQ adds a 9-band parametric EQ with delay and volume calibration. TotalMix Remote mirrors the complete mixer on an iPad or another computer over Ethernet and WiFi, and DIGICheck measures and analyses the audio data.
DC-coupled outputs for CV/Gate
All line-level outputs are fully DC-coupled, so they can send control voltages and gate signals to modular synthesisers and other studio hardware alongside normal audio.
SteadyClock FS and Class Compliant mode
SteadyClock FS is based on a femtosecond clock and reduces intrinsic jitter when converting from and to analog over all digital formats. In Class Compliant mode the operating system recognises the unit directly, giving professional analog I/O to iOS devices and other platforms without a proprietary driver.

RME Fireface UCX II: frequently asked questions
Can the Fireface UCX II record without a computer?
Yes. DURec records all inputs and outputs to a USB thumb drive or hard drive (up to 2 TB) using the internal DSP, independent from a connected computer.
Does it work with an iPad?
Yes. In Class Compliant mode no driver is needed, and TotalMix FX can be used directly from the iPad.
Can I control modular synthesisers?
Yes. All line outputs are DC-coupled and can send CV and gate signals, and MIDI I/O controls external gear.
How is it powered?
By the included external power supply (12 V DC, lockable connector).
