Product overview
The TELEFUNKEN ECC83-TK Vacuum Tube Matched Pair Balanced Triodes is the Black Diamond Series rendition of the ECC83, the dual triode better known by its American designation 12AX7, supplied here as a matched pair of ECC83-TK tubes with balanced triodes.
TELEFUNKEN describes the ECC83-TK as a well-balanced tube suited to all types of music and playing styles. It is designed to allow cleaner headroom than higher gain 12AX7s when pushed into overdrive, and when it is driven it offers distortion with strongly defined lows, a rich mid range and clean, smooth highs.

Key features
- ECC83 / 12AX7 dual triode: high gain, low noise
- Cleaner headroom than higher gain 12AX7s when pushed into overdrive
- Overdrive character: strongly defined lows, rich mid range, clean and smooth highs
- Rich even order harmonic distortion when driven
- Suited to all types of music and playing styles
- Black Diamond Series: rigorously tested, cryogenically treated and extensively burned-in
The ECC83-TK sound
Released in September 1947, the 12AX7 is a high gain, low noise tube and the most popular tube used in input and inter-stage audio amplifiers. Its dual triode design makes it compact and gives a high quality, full frequency response. 12AX7s are known for their rich even order harmonic distortion when driven into overdrive; even order harmonics fit into the western musical scale and are more pleasing to the ear than the odd order harmonic distortion created by transistors. The ECC83-TK keeps that character while giving more clean headroom before it breaks up.
One tube, two names
ECC83 is the European designation and 12AX7 the American one for the same dual triode, so the ECC83-TK goes into any socket specified for an ECC83 or a 12AX7.
Applications
- Guitar amplifier input stage: guitarists refreshing the first preamp position of a tube amplifier
- Full preamp retube: amplifiers with several 12AX7 positions in the preamp and inter-stage circuits
- Bass amplifier preamp: bass players looking for defined lows from the preamp stage
- Hi-fi preamplifier: home audio listeners with tube preamplifiers specified for the 12AX7 or ECC83
- Studio tube outboard: engineers maintaining tube preamps and processors with 12AX7 input stages
- Touring and rental spares: backline techs and rental stores keeping ready replacements
Black Diamond Series
TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik Black Diamond Series vacuum tubes are new production tubes, manufactured in partnership with a specialist vacuum tube factory in Slovakia and designed to be harmonically rich and tonally balanced. Each tube is rigorously tested, cryogenically treated and extensively burned-in before it carries the Black Diamond name, so the ECC83-TK arrives ready for the most demanding applications.
This configuration: Matched Pair, Balanced Triodes
This product is a Matched Pair: two ECC83-TK tubes matched by TELEFUNKEN and supplied together as one set. It is the Balanced Triodes option TELEFUNKEN lists for this dual triode tube (official option name: "Matched Pair w/ Balanced Triodes"), so each tube has balanced triodes. Keep a matched set together in the two positions of the same circuit.
Fitting and care
Always switch the equipment off, unplug it from the mains and let the tubes cool completely before removing or fitting a tube. Fit the ECC83-TK only in a socket specified for the ECC83 or 12AX7, keep each tube in the position of the one it replaces, and press it straight and fully into the socket. Leave any work inside a chassis to a qualified technician. After fitting, let the equipment warm up and listen at low volume first. Store spare tubes in their packaging, protected from knocks and moisture.
