Product overview

The TELEFUNKEN M62 FET Hypercardioid Stereo Set is a matched set of two M60 FET small-diaphragm condenser microphones, each fitted with the TK62 hypercardioid capsule, packed with cables, shock mounts and windscreens in one dual zipper case.

TELEFUNKEN describes the TK62 as excellent for cymbals, percussion and as a stereo pair for live performance recording, and this set is built exactly for that job. Both microphones are hand assembled in TELEFUNKEN's US facility around an ultra-clean, true class-A discrete FET circuit with an American-made transformer, giving the fast transient response and high SPL handling the M60 is known for. The tight hypercardioid pattern focuses each microphone on its source, which helps on busy stages and in rooms that are less than ideal for recording.

Key features

  • Matched set of two M60 FET microphones with TK62 hypercardioid capsules
  • Focused hypercardioid pickup: flat from 150 Hz to 3 kHz, a dip at 6 kHz and a presence peak at 8 kHz
  • Ultra-fast transient response with punchy tone and extended high-frequency clarity
  • High-headroom, low-noise FET amplifier: true class-A discrete circuit, +48V phantom powered
  • TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik T61CT American-made transformer
  • Thread-on TK6x capsules: add TK60 cardioid or TK61 omnidirectional capsules at any time
  • Complete stereo kit in the ZC62 dual zipper case

A stereo pair for live performance

TELEFUNKEN recommends hypercardioid and cardioid capsules for less than ideal recording environments, because an omnidirectional capsule picks up more ambient noise. With two matched M62 microphones set up as a coincident XY pair, a performance can be captured from the stage edge or the audience area with a direct, phase-coherent stereo image and less spill from the room.

Built for cymbals and percussion

With 5 dBA self-noise, 89 dBA signal-to-noise ratio and more than 135 dB SPL handling, each M62 stays clean on hi-hats, ride cymbals and hand percussion. Use the pair as stereo overheads or split them across the hi-hat and ride: both microphones share the same matched response, so the two cymbal channels sit together naturally in the mix.

One amplifier, three patterns

Every M62 is an M60 FET amplifier with a TK62 capsule. Each TK6x capsule has an edge-terminated 15 mm diameter, 6-micron gold-sputtered membrane, is held to a strict ±1 dB sensitivity tolerance and is individually tested and matched by frequency response in TELEFUNKEN's American facility. The ZC62 case has six capsule containers, so the pair can carry TK60 cardioid or TK61 omnidirectional capsules too, and the same capsules fit the ELA M 260 tube microphone.

Setting up and care

TELEFUNKEN's quick start is simple: attach the M 761 shock mount to a stand, push the microphone through both sets of elastics, connect the SGMC-5R cable to the preamp input and apply +48V phantom power, allowing 15 seconds to power up. Mute the channel before engaging phantom power, as the microphone can produce a loud pop as it turns on. Phantom power is a standard feature of most mixers, consoles and preamplifiers, so no external power supply is needed on stage or in the studio. Between sessions, keep the microphones and capsules in the ZC62 dual zipper case.

TELEFUNKEN stereo tips

  • Check phase: always listen for phase cancellation between microphones
  • Distance and low end: cardioid capsules lose low end with distance, while omnidirectional capsules retain low-frequency information
  • Room noise: omnidirectional capsules pick up more ambient noise, so cardioid and hypercardioid capsules are recommended for less than ideal recording environments

TELEFUNKEN M62 FET Hypercardioid Stereo Set: frequently asked questions

What is the M62?

The M62 is the M60 FET amplifier fitted with the TK62 hypercardioid capsule. This set contains two of them as a matched set.

Which stereo techniques suit a hypercardioid pair?

TELEFUNKEN recommends the XY technique with TK62 capsules: the two microphones angled 90 degrees apart with the capsules directly over each other. It sounds direct and is always phase coherent.

Do the microphones need phantom power?

Yes. Each microphone needs +48V phantom power, standard on most mixers, consoles and preamps. Mute the channels before switching it on and allow 15 seconds to power up.

Can I fit other capsules to these microphones?

Yes. TK60 cardioid and TK61 omnidirectional capsules thread straight onto the M60 body, and the ZC62 case holds up to six capsules.

Is a single M62 available?

Yes, the TELEFUNKEN M62 FET Hypercardioid is listed as a separate product at Shivansh Electronics.

Where can I buy the TELEFUNKEN M62 FET Hypercardioid Stereo Set in India?

The TELEFUNKEN M62 FET Hypercardioid Stereo Set is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Live performance stereo recording

TELEFUNKEN's named use for a TK62 stereo pair: a full performance from the stage edge or audience area.

Connections

ConnectTo
2x M62 (3‑pin XLR)3‑pin XLR cables (SGMC‑5R right‑angle cable included)
XLR cablesTwo mic preamp, console or interface inputs
Mic preamps+48V phantom power on both channels

Setup

  1. Mount both M62 microphones in their M 761 shock mounts on a stereo bar.
  2. Connect the XLR cables to two console or recorder inputs.
  3. Mute both channels, switch on +48V phantom power and allow 15 seconds for the microphones to power up.
  4. Set the pair XY: 90 degrees apart with the capsules directly over each other, as close as possible without touching; match gain on both channels.

Tip: Hypercardioid and cardioid capsules are recommended for less than ideal recording environments.

Workflow 2: Drum overheads in XY

A compact, phase-coherent overhead pair for drum kits on stage or in the studio.

Connections

ConnectTo
2x M62 (3‑pin XLR)3‑pin XLR cables (SGMC‑5R right‑angle cable included)
