Product overview

The TELEFUNKEN M82 is a robust end-address large-diaphragm dynamic microphone from the TELEFUNKEN Dynamic Series, designed with kick drum and broadcast vocals in mind and fitted with two independent onboard EQ switches.

Its large dynamic diaphragm has superb low-frequency capability for fat, punchy kick drum tones, while the KICK EQ and HIGH BOOST switches let you tailor the response to the source with ease. That makes the M82 equally suited to vocals, percussion, guitar and bass amplifiers, organ and brass instruments, as well as broadcast and podcast voice. Each M82 is hand assembled and tested in TELEFUNKEN's American facility.

Key features

  • Large-diaphragm 32 mm dynamic capsule with superior low-frequency definition
  • Balanced mid and high-frequency response that adds clarity and intelligibility
  • Independently switchable two-band EQ: KICK EQ mid cut and HIGH BOOST
  • Four distinct EQ curves to match the microphone to the source
  • Very high SPL handling: 146 dB SPL for 1% THD
  • End-address design for easy positioning on most sound sources
  • Cardioid polar pattern
  • Designed and hand assembled in the USA

Large-diaphragm low end

The 32 mm dynamic moving-coil capsule reaches down to 25 Hz, giving kick drums and bass cabinets real weight and definition, while the balanced mid and high-frequency response keeps attack and articulation clear. With 146 dB SPL handling, the M82 stays clean inside a kick drum or right on a loud speaker.

KICK EQ and HIGH BOOST switches

KICK EQ is a low-midrange notch filter with a 6 dB cut at 350 Hz that removes the boxy character of a kick drum and adds definition; it also helps bass amps or any source that needs a cleaner low midrange. HIGH BOOST engages a slow-rising shelf starting around 2 kHz that opens the top end by 6 dB at 10 kHz for added presence. Because the switches work independently, the M82 offers four distinct responses.

Broadcast and podcast voice

With HIGH BOOST on and KICK EQ off, TELEFUNKEN recommends the M82 for broadcast voice. The large diaphragm gives speech a full, warm body and the high-frequency lift adds intelligibility. The end-address design makes it natural to speak straight into, and the optional M 788 Podcast Microphone Boom Arm suits desk set-ups.

End-address design

You address the M82 from its end, like a handheld microphone, so it is quick to aim into a kick drum port, at a speaker cone or at a presenter. The 155 mm, 434 g body is mounted with the included M 782 stand mount and connects with the included SGMC-5R 5-metre right-angle XLR cable.

One microphone, many sources

Beyond kick drum and voice, TELEFUNKEN lists clear EQ recommendations for a wide range of sources. Leave both switches off for vocals, clean electric guitar, brass and woodwind. Use HIGH BOOST alone for distorted guitar amps and mallet-based percussion. Use KICK EQ alone for a bass cabinet or the bottom of an organ rotating-speaker cabinet, and both switches together for floor and rack toms. This flexibility makes the M82 a dependable workhorse in the studio and on stage.
