Product overview

The ART DJ Pre II is a high-accuracy, low-noise phono preamp that connects a turntable to a mixer, stereo receiver, audio workstation, sound card or monitor system.

Its phono circuitry precisely conforms to the RIAA standard and gives clear sound with essential control. The front gain trim boosts or cuts by up to 10 dB for proper gain-staging into the rest of the system, with a signal / clip LED to set the level. A switchable low-cut filter removes turntable rumble while leaving the audio pristine, and the input capacitance switches between 100 and 200 pF to find the response that best matches the cartridge. The RCA line outputs are low impedance, and the unit is housed in a heavy duty, anodised aluminium extruded chassis that runs on a wide variety of external supplies.

Key features

  • High accuracy / low noise preamp conforming to the RIAA curve
  • Switchable low-cut rumble filter (-3 dB at 22 Hz)
  • Variable preamp gain: boost or cut by up to 10 dB
  • Signal present / clip indicator
  • Selectable cartridge loading: 47 kΩ in parallel with 100 pF or 200 pF
  • RCA preamp outputs
  • Heavy duty extruded chassis

Gain, filter and cartridge loading

The gain trim on the front panel works with the signal / clip LED: ART's manual sets the gain so that the indicator only briefly shows clipping (red) on the loudest passages, and turns it down if the LED stays red. The Filter switch rolls off deep bass to remove turntable rumble and skipping in areas with heavy foot traffic, and the Input Cap switch selects 100 pF or 200 pF loading for the cartridge.

Connections and power

The rear panel carries the RCA Preamp Line In for the turntable leads, the RCA Preamp Line Out to the mixer or receiver (an aux or unused tape input), a ground terminal for the turntable's ground wire to reduce hum, and the power input for an external supply of 7-12 V DC or 9-12 V AC at 150 mA.

Applications

ART names portable recording, home recording and project studios. The DJ Pre II amplifies and equalises vinyl records for an audio workstation, sound card, monitor system or a mixer without a built-in phono preamp; being compact and lightweight, its mounting location is not critical.

ART DJ Pre II: frequently asked questions

Why do I need a phono preamp?

A turntable's magnetic cartridge produces a weak signal that also needs RIAA equalisation. A separate RIAA preamp is needed when the turntable connects to a mixer or system without a built-in phono input.

What does the input capacitance switch do?

It switches the cartridge loading between 100 pF and 200 pF (with 47 kΩ) to find the response that best matches the cartridge.

How is the DJ Pre II powered?

By an external supply of 7-12 V DC or 9-12 V AC at 150 mA, connected to the rear power input.

Where can I buy the ART DJ Pre II in India?

The ART DJ Pre II is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Turntable into a mixer or stereo receiver

DJs and vinyl listeners whose mixer or receiver has no phono input.

Connections

ConnectTo
Turntable leadsDJ Pre II Preamp Line In (RCA)
Turntable ground wireDJ Pre II Ground terminal
DJ Pre II Preamp Line Out (RCA)Mixer or receiver aux / unused tape input

Setup

  1. Connect the power supply to the DJ Pre II.
  2. Connect the turntable and its ground wire, then the RCA outputs.
  3. Set the gain so the clip LED only briefly lights red on the loudest passages.
  4. Select the input capacitance that sounds best.

Tip: The low-cut filter rolls off deep bass against turntable rumble.

Workflow 2: Recording vinyl to a computer

Home and project studios digitising records.

Connections

ConnectTo
TurntableDJ Pre II inputs
DJ Pre II RCA line outputsSound card or audio interface line inputs

Setup

  1. Connect the turntable and the line outputs.
  2. Adjust the gain trim for a strong signal without constant clipping.
  3. Record in the recording software.

Tip: The line output jacks are low impedance and work with any sound card.
