Product overview

The GENELEC 1234AC is a smart main studio monitor for demanding film and post production work where perforated screens or high-resolution LED displays are employed, designed for mixing stages and large control rooms.

Its directivity and SPL capability are compatible with typical screen channels in commercial cinema, with the higher performance professional monitoring requires. Two 305 mm woofers flank a rotatable DCW with a 130 mm midrange and a 25 mm tweeter, used horizontally or vertically to tailor the low frequency directivity. GLM compensates for the room, perforated screen effects and delay.

Short‑term max. SPL at 1 m 125 dB
Frequency response (-6 dB) 29 Hz - 21 kHz
RAM‑XL amplifier power 2,150 W
Enclosure weight 79.5 kg

Key features

  • Screen channel monitor for perforated screens and LED displays
  • Horizontal or vertical use with a rotatable DCW (±90°)
  • Three-way design: 2 x 305 mm woofers, 130 mm midrange, 25 mm metal dome tweeter
  • 125 dB short-term SPL at 1 m; peak 130 dB per pair at 2 m
  • 34 Hz - 20 kHz (±2 dB) response
  • RAM-XL amplifier: 2 x 750 W + 400 W + 250 W in a 3U rack unit
  • Analogue and AES/EBU inputs (up to 192 kHz) with AES/EBU thru
  • GLM: room, perforated screen and delay compensation

Make accurate decisions

Precise on- and off-axis imaging lets you make accurate mix decisions even outside the narrow sweet spot of most studio monitors.

Optimise for your room

GLM compensates for room influence, perforated screen effects and delay, and builds complete systems with other GENELEC smart monitors and subwoofers, for traditional or large immersive formats.

Remote RAM-XL amplifier

The individually calibrated RAM-XL is a 19-inch 3U rack unit with fan cooling; 10 m Speakon and RJ45 cables are included for the link to the enclosure with the same serial number.

In the box

  • GENELEC 1234AC monitor
  • Individually calibrated RAM-XL amplifier unit
  • Mains cable (1.8 m)
  • RJ45 cable (5 m)
  • RJ45 cable (10 m)
  • 2 x four-pole Speakon cables (10 m)
  • Allen key (for the DCW plate)
  • Operating manual

GLM calibration uses the free GLM software with the GENELEC 9320A SAM Reference Controller or the GLM Calibration Kit (each available separately).

GENELEC 1234AC: frequently asked questions

Can the 1234AC be used behind a projection screen?

Yes. GENELEC designed it for film and post production where perforated screens or high-resolution LED displays are used, and GLM compensates for perforated screen effects.

Horizontal or vertical?

Either: the orientation tailors the low frequency directivity to the room, and the DCW rotates so that the midrange and tweeter stay vertical.

What do I need for GLM calibration?

The free GLM software and a GENELEC 9320A SAM Reference Controller or GLM Calibration Kit (each available separately).

Where can I buy the GENELEC 1234AC in India?

The GENELEC 1234AC is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Stereo main monitoring with GLM calibration

Set up a pair of 1234AC monitors as the calibrated reference of a control room.

Connections

ConnectTo
Console or monitor controller outputsANALOG IN (XLR) or DIGITAL IN AES/EBU
GLM adapter (9320A or GLM Calibration Kit)CONTROL NETWORK (RJ45)
Computer with GLMGLM adapter, USB
MainsMAINS INPUT, earthed outlet

Setup

  1. Place the monitors symmetrically with their acoustic axes aimed at the listening position.
  2. Link the RAM-XL to its own enclosure (same serial number) with the two Speakon cables and the RJ45 LED cable.
  3. Daisy-chain the CONTROL NETWORK sockets and end at the GLM adapter; place the measurement microphone at ear height.
  4. Run GLM AutoCal, then store the settings in the monitors.

Tip: Keep the AES/EBU source level near 0 dBFS and lower the GLM level instead, to keep full digital resolution.

Workflow 2: Flush mounting in the front wall

Build the monitors into the wall to avoid edge diffraction and wall reflections.

Connections

ConnectTo
Monitor enclosureWall opening with 50‑100 mm clearance
Vibration isolatorsUnder the enclosure (2‑8 Hz resonance) in light walls
Facing panel and gasketFront of the wall, 5‑10 mm soft rubber gap

Setup

  1. Make the wall stiff and heavy and angle it so the monitors aim at the listener (tilt under 15 degrees).
  2. Rotate the DCW so the midrange and tweeter align vertically (eight M5 screws, 4 mm Allen key).
  3. Fit the facing panel flush with the enclosure and fill the gap with a soft rubber gasket.
  4. Keep any cloth frame under 20 mm deep and acoustically transparent.

Tip: Plan the cable recess behind the enclosure: the Speakon connectors need about 100 mm.

Workflow 3: Machine room amplifiers

Keep amplifier heat and fan noise out of the control room.

Connections

ConnectTo
RAM‑XL amplifier19‑inch rack, 3U
EnclosureWOOFER and MIDRANGE/TWEETER Speakon, LED CONNECTOR RJ45
GLM networkCONTROL NETWORK, in any order in the chain

Setup

  1. Mount each amplifier in the rack with free air around it (RAM-XL: 100 mm free behind).
  2. Run the 10 m Speakon and RJ45 cables; for longer runs use 2.0 mm² up to 30 m, 3.3 mm² up to 40 m, 5.3 mm² up to 60 m.
  3. Turn each Speakon connector clockwise until it locks.
  4. Network the amplifiers last in the GLM chain if they are in the machine room.

Tip: Never mix amplifier and enclosure pairs: each amplifier is calibrated for its own enclosure.

Workflow 4: Surround and immersive systems

Use the monitors as the main channels of a 5.1 or immersive system.

Connections

ConnectTo
1234AC monitorsMain channels on the GLM network
GENELEC SAM subwoofers and monitorsSame GLM network
AES/EBU sourceDIGITAL IN, with DIGITAL THRU to the next monitor

Setup

  1. Place the monitors according to ITU-R BS.775-1 for 5-channel work.
  2. Assign each monitor's AES/EBU subframe (A or B) in GLM.
  3. Measure all monitors and subwoofers together with GLM.
  4. Store the settings or keep the computer connected for control.

Tip: One AES/EBU line can feed up to four SAM units through the DIGITAL THRU connectors.

Workflow 5: Broadcast and post production without a computer

Run calibrated monitors in a facility where no computer stays connected.

Connections

ConnectTo
AES/EBU or analogue feedDIGITAL IN or ANALOG IN
MainsMAINS INPUT

Setup

  1. Calibrate the system with GLM.
  2. Use Store the Settings to write the setup into the monitors.
  3. Disconnect the computer; the monitors keep their calibration.
  4. Switch on ISS in GLM if the monitors should go to standby when idle.

Tip: Watch the front light: red means overload or an AES/EBU data error; turn the source down.

Workflow 6: Mastering and critical listening

Make final decisions on a neutral, low-distortion reference.

Connections

ConnectTo
Mastering chain outputDIGITAL IN AES/EBU (up to 192 kHz) or ANALOG IN
GLM networkCONTROL NETWORK

Setup

  1. Place the monitors symmetrically at equal distance from the listening position.
  2. Calibrate with GLM and check the level alignment.
  3. Set the input sensitivity in GLM for a comfortable working level.
  4. Keep symmetrical reflective surfaces around the listening position.

Tip: These monitors can exceed 85 dB SPL: protect your hearing in long sessions.
