Product overview

The GENELEC 8341A is a SAM (Smart Active Monitor) three-way coaxial studio monitor from GENELEC's The Ones series: a true point source with GLM room calibration. The bigger brother of the 8331A, with more low-frequency extension and a higher SPL for slightly longer listening distances.

A Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) midrange/tweeter driver and two Acoustically Concealed Woofers (ACW) share one acoustic axis, and the whole curved front of the die-cast aluminium enclosure works as a Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW). The result is extraordinary imaging, controlled directivity down to low bass and less listener fatigue over long sessions. Three Class D amplifiers (250 W, 150 W and 150 W) drive the bass, midrange and treble, and the free GLM software with AutoCal adapts the 8341A to your room for mono, stereo or immersive work. Typical listening distances are from 1 m or less up to 3 m.

Key features

  • Three-way coaxial point source: MDC driver and two ACW woofers on one acoustic axis
  • 38 Hz to 37 kHz (-6 dB), ±1.5 dB from 45 Hz - 20 kHz
  • 110 dB short-term SPL, 118 dB peak per pair
  • Tri-amplified: 250 W bass, 150 W midrange and 150 W treble, all Class D
  • Analogue and AES/EBU inputs: a balanced analogue XLR input, an AES/EBU digital XLR input and a digital thru (32-192 kHz)
  • Smart Active Monitoring: 16 parametric notch filters and 2 LF + 2 HF shelving filters set by GLM AutoCal
  • Two GLM network ports for calibration and daily monitor control
  • Stand-alone controls: bass roll-off, desktop, bass tilt, treble tilt, level and input selection
  • Very low self-generated noise: 3 dB SPL or less
  • Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) automatic power saving
  • Die-cast aluminium MDE enclosure with reflex port and the Iso-Pod vibration-isolating stand
  • Finishes: Dark Grey, Black, White, RAW

A true point source

In the 8341A every driver radiates from the same acoustic centre. The coaxial driver has no acoustic discontinuities between the tweeter and the midrange cone, so there is no diffraction and the response stays smooth on and off axis. The two 170 x 90 mm woofers radiate through openings at the ends of the front and sum acoustically on the same axis, so directivity is controlled down to low bass and the monitor interacts less with the room.

Calibrated to your room with GLM

Connect the 8341A to the GLM network, place the GENELEC measurement microphone at the listening position and GLM AutoCal sets level, distance delay and room response compensation for every monitor and subwoofer. Settings can be stored in the monitor so a computer is needed only for setup, or GLM can stay connected as a monitor controller for switching sets of loudspeakers, solo, mute and calibrated listening levels. Calibration needs the free GLM software and either the 9320A SAM Reference Controller or the GLM Calibration Kit (each sold separately).

Works without a computer too

DIP switches on the back set bass roll-off (-2/-4/-6 dB), desktop compensation (-4 dB at 160 Hz), bass tilt (-2/-4/-6 dB below 800 Hz), treble tilt (+2/-2/-4 dB above 5 kHz), input level, AES/EBU channel, the front light and ISS. A rotary level control completes a 42 dB adjustment range, and the STORED switch recalls the settings saved by GLM.

Built for long sessions

The die-cast aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure is stiff, well damped and a good heat sink for the amplifiers. The Iso-Pod stand tilts the monitor towards the listener and isolates vibration from the desk or stand, and the 8341A can be used vertically or horizontally, on stands or on wall and ceiling mounts (two m6 x 10 mm threaded holes on the back; m10 x 10 mm thread in the base (not for microphone stands)).

In the box

  • RJ45 GLM network cable (5 m)
  • Operating manual
  • The Ones brochure

GLM calibration needs the free GLM software and the 9320A SAM Reference Controller or the GLM Calibration Kit (sold separately).

GENELEC 8341A: frequently asked questions

Does the 8341A need GLM?

No. It works stand-alone with its rear DIP switches and level control. It reaches its full potential when calibrated with the free GLM software, which GENELEC recommends.

Can the 8341A take a digital signal?

Yes. It has an AES/EBU digital input (16-24 bit, 32-192 kHz) and a digital thru for daisy-chaining up to four monitors, besides the balanced analogue XLR input.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. GENELEC recommends the 7300 series subwoofers or the W371A adaptive woofer system for the 8341A, calibrated together in GLM.

Where is the 8341A made?

GENELEC monitors are designed, hand-built and individually tested and calibrated at the GENELEC factory in Iisalmi, Finland.

Where can I buy the GENELEC 8341A in India?

The GENELEC 8341A is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Stereo nearfield pair calibrated with GLM

Set up two monitors in a mixing room and let GLM correct level, delay and room response.

Connections

ConnectTo
Interface or console outputsANALOG IN (XLR) of the left and right 8341A
GLM networkRJ45 cable from monitor to monitor, then to the GLM adapter
GLM adapterUSB port of the Mac or Windows computer
Measurement microphoneGLM adapter microphone input, at the listening position

Setup

  1. Place the monitors symmetrically and aim the acoustic axes at the listening position.
  2. Connect the GLM network and the adapter, and install the free GLM software.
  3. Run AutoCal with the microphone at ear height, pointing upwards.
  4. Check the result, then store the settings in the monitors or keep GLM as a monitor controller.

Tip: Avoid placing the monitors 1.0-2.2 m in front of a hard wall: the reflection can reduce the bass.

Workflow 2: Stand-alone setup without a computer

Use the monitors straight away with the rear DIP switches and level control.

Connections

ConnectTo
Analogue sourceANALOG IN (XLR)
MainsMAINS INPUT, 100‑240 V~

Setup

  1. Make sure the GLM network is not connected and set the STORED switch to OFF.
  2. Choose the room settings: for example bass tilt -2 dB and desktop -4 dB for a monitor near-field on a reflective surface.
  3. Set the input sensitivity with the LEVEL switches and the rotary control.
  4. Use ISS to let the monitor sleep automatically when no signal is present.

Tip: In a corner, GENELEC suggests bass tilt -4 dB and bass roll-off -4 dB as a starting point.
