Product overview
The LYNX AES16e is a sixteen-channel AES/EBU PCI Express card: eight stereo inputs and eight stereo outputs of 24-bit AES/EBU at up to 192 kHz, in single-wire and dual-wire modes, with the LYNX SynchroLock sample clock generator.
Designed to integrate digital consoles, multichannel A/D and D/A converters, hard disk recorders, recording workstations and other digital audio equipment, the AES16e builds on the industry-standard AES16 with an updated feature set and the higher bandwidth of PCI Express, which reduces bottlenecks and overhead for computer-based high-end audio. Sample rate, sync source, channel routing and buffer size are all set and monitored from the host computer, and an extensive on-board digital mixer gives zero-latency monitoring and matrixing.
| AES/EBU channels, single wire | 16 x 16 |
| Single and dual wire | 192 kHz |
| SynchroLock jitter rejection | 3000:1 |
| Surround playback formats | 5.1 / 7.1 |
Key features
- Eight stereo inputs and eight stereo outputs (16 mono I/O), AES/EBU, 24-bit, single and dual wire, transformer coupled
- SynchroLock sample clock generator with 3000:1 jitter rejection on external clock sources
- Extensive on-board digital mixer: any input to any or several outputs
- All settings controlled and monitored from the host computer
- Multichannel support for 5.1 and 7.1 surround playback
- Low-latency drivers for current computers
- LStream expansion port for LYNX LStream cards
- Field-upgradable firmware
Breakout cables
- CBL-AES1604: 26-pin high-density male D-sub to 4 female XLR (AES inputs), 4 male XLR (AES outputs) and 2 female BNC (word clock), six feet
- CBL-AES1605: 26-pin high-density male D-sub to 25-pin male D-sub for direct connection to an Aurora converter, twelve feet
Clocking
The sample clock can come from digital inputs 1-4, external word clock on BNC (with the CBL-AES1604), internal word clock on the board header or the on-board low-jitter crystal oscillator. Several AES16e cards can be synchronised with the internal clock cable, daisy-chaining Clock Out to Clock In.
Compatible with
- LYNX Aurora and Aurora(n) converters (with CBL-AES1605)
- AES/EBU equipment with XLR connectors (with CBL-AES1604)
In the box
- AES16e PCI Express card (cables optional)
LYNX AES16e: frequently asked questions
How do I connect equipment with XLR connectors?
With the CBL-AES1604 breakout cable: one per I/O port, giving 4 AES inputs, 4 AES outputs and word clock BNCs. Two are needed for 16-channel operation.
Can it connect directly to an Aurora converter?
Yes, with the CBL-AES1605 26-pin to 25-pin D-sub cable; port A carries digital inputs and outputs 1-4, port B 5-8.
Does it work at 192 kHz?
Yes, in both single-wire (16 channels) and dual-wire (8 channels) AES modes.
Where can I buy the LYNX AES16e in India?
The LYNX AES16e is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.
Workflow 1: Multichannel converters to a computer
Studios using external 8-channel A/D and D/A converters.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| A/D and D/A converters | Port A via CBL‑AES1604 or CBL‑AES1605 |
| Second converter set | Port B |
| Converter word clock | Clock BNC on CBL‑AES1604 |
Setup
- Install the card and driver.
- Connect the converters to ports A and B.
- Select the word clock or a digital input as clock source.
- Record 16 channels in your recording software.
Tip: Only one device in the system should be the clock master.
Workflow 2: Digital console integration
Facilities with an AES/EBU digital console.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Console AES outputs | AES16e inputs |
| Console AES inputs | AES16e outputs |
Setup
- Connect with CBL-AES1604 cables.
- Set the sample rate in the Lynx Mixer.
- Route inputs and play streams in the mixer.
- Monitor with zero latency through the mixer.
Tip: Several AES16e cards can share one clock with the internal clock cable.
