Product overview

The NEUMANN KH 805 II is a reference-quality, DSP-controlled studio subwoofer for medium-sized rooms, with a long-throw 10" driver, a flexible 2.0 / 0.1 bass manager and analog XLR and AES3 connectivity: deep and powerful bass down to 16 Hz with Neumann precision.

The KH 805 II is the perfect complement to mid-sized Neumann KH line studio monitors such as the KH 150 and KH 310. Its bass manager serves stereo systems and the subwoofer can also be used in surround and immersive set-ups for LFE reproduction or with external bass management. A novel long-throw woofer with Extremely Linear Force Factor (ELFF™) technology and intelligent protection limiters keeps distortion exceptionally low even at maximum SPL. It supports MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment (sold separately) and, combined with analog Neumann monitors such as the KH 310 or KH 420, has the DSP power to align the entire stereo system, optimising both frequency response and phase.

Lower limit, free field (±6 dB) 16 Hz
Max. SPL in the corner (3 % THD, 1 m) 116 dB
Woofer amplifier output power 222 W

Key features

  • Deep and powerful bass down to 16 Hz (±6 dB), 18 - 310 Hz (±3 dB)
  • Long-throw 10" driver with ELFF™ technology and a resonance-optimised basket
  • 2.0 / 0.1 bass management with a bypassable 4th order 80 Hz crossover
  • Four routing modes: stereo 80 Hz, external bass management, LFE up to 120 Hz, LFE full range
  • MA 1 ready: room correction for the subwoofer and connected analog KH line monitors (patented)
  • Analog XLR inputs and outputs, electronically balanced; AES3 / S/P-DIF digital input and AES3 output (BNC)
  • Input gain, output level, 8-position phase and continuous low cut controls
  • Network connector for control via MA 1; local / network control mode switch
  • Universal switched-mode power supply (100 - 240 V), ground lift, auto standby

Next generation subwoofer

The KH 805 II improves on its predecessor in acoustic performance and adds new features. The in-house modelled long-throw driver damps break-up modes for low distortion at high levels, its extremely linear force factor keeps harmonic distortion low even at high excursions, and air noise and rocking modes are minimised. The 222 W amplifier has low heat dissipation, large headroom and sophisticated protection with soft clip, excursion and thermal limiters.

Precision in every detail

As subwoofers are typically placed on the floor, a robust grille protects the driver from accidental damage. The compact, ultra-stiff wooden cabinet with its tough painted finish and built-in rubber feet has excellent self-damping and no internal standing wave resonances, and its highly efficient front-ported bass reflex system is tuned for the tightest bass reproduction with inaudible port noise.

Bass management and routing

In stereo mode with bass management active, a 4th order 80 Hz high-pass filter is inserted into the left and right outputs and all audio below 80 Hz is routed to the subwoofer, so the main loudspeakers play louder and with lower distortion. With bass management disabled, the loudspeakers play full range as if there were no subwoofer. External bass management mode avoids double filtering when a bass manager precedes the subwoofer, and two LFE modes reproduce the LFE channel.

Connectivity and control

Two electronically balanced XLR inputs and two XLR outputs, plus an up to 192 kHz / 24-bit BNC digital input accepting AES3 and S/P-DIF and an AES3 output, allow flexible connection. A valid digital signal is selected automatically. The Ethernet connector uses standard IP over your existing network for control with the MA 1 software, and a control mode switch selects between operation from the backplate and network control.

Applications

The KH 805 II excels in music, broadcast and post-production studios for tracking, mixing and mastering: bass extension for loudspeakers, a higher maximum SPL for the whole system, lower distortion of the main monitors, LFE playback and Plane Wave Bass Array™ set-ups with several subwoofers.

In the box

  • 1 x KH 805 II subwoofer
  • 4 x mains cables, black (EU/KR, UK, US and CN)
  • 1 x safety guide
  • 1 x supplement "Getting Started Quickly"

NEUMANN KH 805 II: frequently asked questions

How low does the KH 805 II go?

Its free-field frequency response reaches 16 Hz (±6 dB); within ±3 dB it covers 18 - 310 Hz.

Which monitors does it suit?

Neumann describes it as the perfect complement to mid-sized KH line monitors such as the KH 150 and KH 310, and it also works with analog KH monitors such as the KH 420, which it can align with MA 1.

Does it need the MA 1 software?

No. It can be set up completely from the backplate in local mode. MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment (sold separately) adds room correction for the subwoofer and the connected monitors, remote control and firmware updates.

What inputs does it have?

Two electronically balanced XLR inputs and a BNC digital input for AES3 and S/P-DIF signals up to 192 kHz / 24-bit, plus two XLR outputs and an AES3 output for the loudspeakers.

Where can I buy the NEUMANN KH 805 II in India?

The NEUMANN KH 805 II is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Stereo monitoring with bass management

Music producers and mix engineers with a pair of KH line monitors.

Connections

ConnectTo
Interface or controller outputs L / RKH 805 II ANALOG INPUT LEFT/A and RIGHT/B
KH 805 II ANALOG OUTPUT LEFT/A and RIGHT/BLeft and right studio monitors

Setup

  1. Place the subwoofer against the front wall, ideally at ¼ or ¾ of the room width.
  2. Set CHANNEL B INPUT MODE to stereo and BASS MANAGEMENT to active.
  3. Adjust input gain, output level and phase for a seamless transition at 80 Hz.
  4. Listen and fine-tune the low cut if the room adds low-frequency energy.

Tip: With bass management disabled the monitors play full range, for quick comparisons.

Workflow 2: Digital stereo via AES3

Studios with digital outputs on their converter or controller.

Connections

ConnectTo
AES3 or S/P‑DIF source (BNC)KH 805 II DIGITAL AES3 INPUT
KH 805 II DIGITAL AES3 OUTPUTMonitors with digital input

Setup

  1. Connect the digital source to the BNC input; it is selected automatically.
  2. Use an impedance and level converter for AES3 from XLR (110 Ω).
  3. Connect the AES3 output to the monitors.
  4. Set routing mode and levels on the backplate.

Tip: Digital connections avoid unnecessary conversions when the source is digital.
