The SONODYNE SSW 2020 is a stereo passive subwoofer with both direct (4 Ω) and 70 / 100 V input, and a pair of high-pass outputs for satellite speakers.

An 8 inch dual voice-coil driver in a vented, front firing MDF cabinet covers 40 Hz to 200 Hz (response 45 Hz to 200 Hz), with 90 dB sensitivity (1 W, 1 m, half space) and 109 dB SPL at 80 W. In direct mode it takes 150 W + 150 W at 4 Ω + 4 Ω (stereo) or 8 Ω (mono); on a 70 V line it offers 10, 20 and 40 W taps, on a 100 V line 20, 40 and 80 W. It comes fitted with wall-mount brackets.

Direct and 70 / 100 V inputs

The INPUT SELECT slide switch chooses DIRECT, for the 4 Ω speaker output of an amplifier, or 70 / 100 V, for a line output. The 70 / 100 V input has a COM pin and three tap pins: 10, 20 and 40 W at 70 V (impedance 490, 245, 122 Ω), or 20, 40 and 80 W at 100 V.

Stereo and mono modes

The MODE switch selects stereo or mono. In stereo mode each satellite output should see a 4 Ω satellite. In mono mode, as with a 70 / 100 V line, the subwoofers are connected in series and the high-pass output is available from the left channel only, for an 8 Ω satellite.

Cabinet and mounting

The vented MDF cabinet measures 480 x 370 x 225 mm (W x H x D) and weighs 15.5 kg. Two sets of wall mount brackets come fitted: one part stays on the cabinet, the other is screwed to the wall, and the cabinet is lowered onto the wall brackets, as the owner's manual shows.
