Product overview

The TASCAM Studio Bridge is a 24-track multitrack recorder and 24-in / 24-out USB audio interface with MIDI: quite literally the bridge between an analogue mixer and digital recording, whether you work with a DAW or completely DAW-less.

Three balanced D-sub 25-pin inputs and three D-sub 25-pin outputs carry 24 channels of line-level audio each way, ready for a mixer's direct outs and channel returns or a rack of mic preamps. Record all 24 tracks straight to an SD card with no computer, or connect over USB and record into your software, then send the tracks back through your console for analogue summing. DAW transport control, MIDI sync, a click output with tap tempo, a headphone/local monitor section and a free Settings Panel with meter bridge complete a solid metal unit for the studio desk or the stage.

A 24-track recorder, no computer required

Connect your analogue mixer and the Studio Bridge becomes a modular 24-channel recorder. Create a song, arm tracks with the illuminated REC buttons and record up to 24 tracks at once in WAV (BWF) format. Punch in to replace a section by hand, with a footswitch or with auto punch, swap tracks to bounce, and add marks for quick locating. Songs created on TASCAM Model series mixers can also be loaded on the Studio Bridge.

24-in / 24-out audio interface for your DAW

Over USB the Studio Bridge presents 24 inputs and 24 outputs to your recording software, so every mixer channel lands on its own track. Return the tracks to the console through the 24 analogue outputs to build a summed mix with your outboard gear. TASCAM's own driver for Windows allows buffer sizes as low as 4 samples, and per-channel direct local monitoring lets you hear inputs straight from the unit.

Analogue summing and stereo masters

Play the recorded tracks back through your mixer for an analogue mixdown, keeping tracks 23 and 24 free to record the stereo master. The Stereo Mix Export function then converts the master tracks into a single stereo WAV file, ready for release and playable on the unit in SD PLAY mode.

Control, sync and monitoring

In DAW Control mode the transport keys, REC READY buttons, MULTI JOG dial and function buttons operate play, stop, record, locate, markers and track banks in your software. MTC and MIDI Clock with Song Position Pointer from MIDI OUT or USB keep drum machines, sequencers and software locked to the recorder. The built-in metronome (20 to 250 BPM) feeds its own click output, and the front-panel headphone/local monitor section can play all 24 channels, armed tracks, soloed channels or a stereo track pair.

Settings Panel and meter bridge

The free TASCAM Settings Panel for Windows and Mac includes a digital meter bridge showing track levels, analogue inputs, USB returns and analogue outputs for every channel, with peak hold, so you can watch all 24 channels from your computer screen.

In the box

  • TASCAM Studio Bridge
  • Power cords (x 2, 3-pronged with protective grounding)
  • 3-prong to 2-prong adapter (for Japan)
  • Safety Guide (with warranty)
  • TASCAM ID registration guide

Recording uses an SD, SDHC or SDXC card (Class 10 or higher), purchased separately; TASCAM publishes a list of tested cards. The Settings Panel software and Windows driver are free downloads from TASCAM.

TASCAM Studio Bridge: frequently asked questions

Do I need a computer to record with the Studio Bridge?

No. The Studio Bridge records up to 24 tracks directly to an SD card. Connect a computer only when you want to use it as a USB audio interface, control your DAW or transfer files.

How do I connect it to my mixer?

Use D-sub 25-pin multicables wired to the TASCAM DB-25 pinout (AES59-2012). Each connector carries eight balanced line-level channels: inputs 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24, and outputs 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24.

How much recording time do I get?

On a 32 GB card, 24 tracks record for about 4 hours 10 minutes at 16-bit/44.1 kHz and about 2 hours 33 minutes at 24-bit/48 kHz. Cards up to 512 GB are supported.

Can I move recordings to my computer?

Yes. In STORAGE mode the SD card appears on the computer as a drive; the recorded WAV files sit in the MTR folder, ready to import into your software. WAV files can also be copied in and imported to tracks.

Where can I buy the TASCAM Studio Bridge in India?

The TASCAM Studio Bridge is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Recording and mixing with an analogue mixer and a DAW

Track through your console's preamps and EQ into your software, then return every track to the mixer for analogue mixdown.

Connections

ConnectTo
Mixer direct outs 1‑24ANALOG INPUTS 1‑8 / 9‑16 / 17‑24 (D‑sub multicables)
ANALOG OUTPUTS 1‑8 / 9‑16 / 17‑24Mixer channel or tape returns 1‑24

Setup

  1. Install the TASCAM Settings Panel (includes the Windows driver; no driver is needed on Mac) and select Studio Bridge in your recording software.
  2. Create a song on the Studio Bridge with the same sample rate and bit depth as your DAW project.
  3. Assign Studio Bridge inputs 1-24 to separate DAW tracks and record, checking levels on the SIGNAL/PEAK indicators and the meter bridge.
  4. For mixdown, send each DAW track to its Studio Bridge output and mix on the console with your outboard gear.

Tip: Switch on DAW Control mode to run play, stop, record and REC READY in your software from the Studio Bridge's own buttons.

Workflow 2: DAW-less multitrack recording with an analogue mixer

Record and mix 24 tracks with your console and the Studio Bridge alone: no computer in the chain.
