Product overview
The GENELEC 8020D is the latest revision of an enduring studio classic: a compact two-way active nearfield monitor that has set the benchmark for performance versus size for over 15 years.
The 8020D delivers an even higher SPL yet lower energy consumption than previous versions, and adapts to the broadest possible range of listening environments. Engineers love its transparent, truthful reproduction and wide, uncoloured sweet spot for accurate mix decisions. A 4-inch woofer and 3/4-inch metal dome tweeter, both magnetically shielded, are driven by 50 W Class D amplifiers through an active crossover, in a die-cast aluminium enclosure with a DCW waveguide. It is designed for nearfield monitoring, mobile vans, broadcast and TV control rooms, surround systems, home studios and multimedia.

Transparent and truthful
With its wide, uncoloured sweet spot the 8020D lets you make reliable mix decisions wherever space is at a premium. Every Classic monitor is factory calibrated and evaluated for acoustic performance, so pairs and multichannel systems match closely.
Minimum Diffraction Enclosure and DCW waveguide
The 8020D is built around GENELEC's die-cast aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE): curved walls and rounded edges reduce the edge diffraction that colours ordinary box loudspeakers, while the Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) shapes the tweeter's wavefront for a flat response on and off axis. The result is a wide, consistent listening window, fewer early reflections from desks and walls, accurate stereo imaging and a monitoring system that depends less on the room.
Room response controls
Four rear panel controls tune the 8020D to the room: Desktop 200 Hz (-4 dB at 200 Hz) for monitors on a meter bridge or table, Treble Tilt (-2 dB above 5 kHz) for a bright system, Bass Tilt (-2, -4 or -6 dB) near walls and Bass Roll-Off (-4 dB at 65 Hz) for heavy bass near room boundaries. The factory setting is all OFF for a flat anechoic response.
Intelligent Signal Sensing and the Iso-Pod stand
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) puts the 8020D into standby below 0.5 W when no audio has been present for a while and wakes it automatically when a signal returns; it can be disabled on the rear panel. The supplied Iso-Pod (Isolation Positioner/Decoupler) stand isolates the monitor from the desk or console and tilts it so that the acoustic axis points at the listener, reducing colouration from vibration and surface reflections.
Versatile mounting
The 8020D has a 3/8 in UNC thread in the base for a standard microphone stand and two M6x10 mm threaded holes on the rear for wall and ceiling brackets. GENELEC accessories include table, floor and Triol stands, the L-shape table stand, wall, ceiling and truss mounts, a VESA adapter, an Iso-Pod kit and a soft carrying case.
In the box
- 1 x GENELEC 8020D studio monitor
- 1 x mains cable (1.8 m)
- 1 x operating manual
- 1 x Iso-Pod kit
GENELEC 8020D: frequently asked questions
Does the 8020D need a separate amplifier?
No. Two 50 W Class D amplifiers are built in. Connect a line-level source to the balanced XLR input; never connect it to the loudspeaker outputs of an amplifier or receiver.
Can I connect an unbalanced source?
Yes, as long as pin 3 is grounded to pin 1 at the unbalanced source connector.
How do I adjust the level?
With the rotary sensitivity control on the back panel: it gives up to 12 dB of continuously variable attenuation; -6 dBu produces 100 dB SPL at 1 m with the control at maximum.
Can it be mounted on a microphone stand?
Yes. The base has a 3/8 in UNC thread compatible with a standard microphone stand.
Where can I buy the GENELEC 8020D in India?
The GENELEC 8020D is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.
Workflow 1: Stereo nearfield pair on a desk
Set up a stereo pair for mixing and editing at a desk or workstation.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Audio interface or monitor controller (left / right outputs) | XLR input of each monitor (balanced cables) |
| Iso‑Pod stands | Under each monitor, tilted towards the listener |
| Mains | Supplied mains cables |
Setup
- Place the monitors symmetrically, at equal distance from the listening position, with the acoustic axes aimed at ear height.
- Connect the balanced XLR cables first and the mains cables last.
- Set the room response switches for desk placement: Desktop ON and Bass Tilt -2 dB (on a desk).
- Turn the rotary sensitivity control to match your source: -6 dBu gives 100 dB SPL at 1 m with the control at maximum.
Tip: Keep the monitors clear of the screen and other reflecting objects; tilt them with the Iso-Pod rather than raising the desk level.
Workflow 2: Monitors near a wall or in a small room
Correct the bass build-up that walls and corners cause in compact rooms.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Line‑level source | XLR input |
| Room response switches | Rear panel |
Setup
- Start with all switches OFF (flat anechoic response).
- For placement near a wall: Bass Tilt -4 dB.
- Listen to well-known reference recordings or measure at the listening position.
- Change one setting at a time until the bass sounds even and natural.
Tip: Respect the minimum clearances behind, above and beside the monitor so the reflex port and cooling work properly.
Workflow 3: Surround and immersive monitoring
Build a 5-channel or larger system from identical monitors.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Multichannel interface or controller outputs | XLR input of each monitor |
| Wall, ceiling or stand mounts | GENELEC mounting accessories on the rear threads |
Setup
- Place the monitors at equal distance from the listening position, following the angles in the Quick Setup Guide.
- Aim every acoustic axis at the listening position.
- Set the room response switches for each monitor according to its own placement.
- Match the levels with the sensitivity control and an SPL meter.
Tip: Compact and light, the 8020D mounts easily on walls, ceilings or microphone stands for multichannel rooms.
Workflow 4: Broadcast, OB van and post production
Neutral monitoring in control rooms, outside broadcast vans and editing suites.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Console or monitor controller output | XLR input (balanced) |
| Mounting | Bracket on the rear threads or Iso‑Pod on a shelf |
Setup
- Mount the monitors so that the acoustic axes point at the operator.
- Choose the switch settings for the mounting position from the operating manual's table.
- Use the sensitivity setting to match the console's output level.
- Use ISS so the monitors go to standby when the room is not in use.
Tip: Magnetically shielded drivers and a compact enclosure suit control rooms and vans where space is tight.
Workflow 5: Adding a GENELEC subwoofer
Extend the bass response or raise the SPL of the system.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| Source outputs | Subwoofer inputs |
| Subwoofer outputs | XLR inputs of the 8020D pair |
Setup
- Connect the source to the GENELEC subwoofer and its outputs to the monitors.
- Place the subwoofer as described in its own manual.
- Set the monitors' room response switches for their placement.
- Balance the subwoofer level against the monitors at the listening position.
Tip: The 8020D operating manual states that its bass response can be extended with a GENELEC subwoofer.
Workflow 6: Energy-saving everyday use
Leave the system ready all day without wasting power.
Connections
| Connect | To |
|---|---|
| ISS switch | Rear panel |
| Power switch | Rear panel |
Setup
- Leave the power switch ON with ISS active.
- The monitor drops to standby (below 0.5 W) after the signal has been absent for a while.
- It wakes automatically when audio arrives; there is a slight delay.
- If the delay is a problem, disable ISS and switch the monitor with the power switch.
Tip: Removing the mains cable is the only way to disconnect the amplifier completely from the mains.
