Product overview

The GENELEC 8040B is a compact bi-amplified active monitor with performance comparable to much larger systems: 105 dB of SPL and bass that reaches right down to 41 Hz.

The choice of recording professionals around the world, the 8040B provides truthfulness and energy in equal measure. It takes full advantage of the GENELEC 8000 series: the all-aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure and the Directivity Control Waveguide are matched with advanced amplifiers and drivers, and a new rear reflex port design widens the bass response to 45 Hz (-3 dB) with substantially lower distortion. Its recycled aluminium enclosure combines transparent, uncoloured sound with a distinctive look, and Intelligent Signal Sensing switches it into a power-saving standby when you have finished.

Integrated construction

Only the mains supply and the line-level input need to be connected. The integrated design lets GENELEC calibrate the amplifiers and drivers as one unit, eliminating component tolerances and ensuring consistent production quality. Protective grilles cover both drivers, and magnetic shielding is standard: vital for applications such as video post production.

Minimum Diffraction Enclosure and DCW waveguide

The 8040B is built around GENELEC's die-cast aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE): curved walls and rounded edges reduce the edge diffraction that colours ordinary box loudspeakers, while the Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) shapes the tweeter's wavefront for a flat response on and off axis. The result is a wide, consistent listening window, fewer early reflections from desks and walls, accurate stereo imaging and a monitoring system that depends less on the room.

Room response controls

Calibrated controls in the active crossover keep the frequency balance right in different rooms: Bass Roll-Off (0 to -6 dB at 45 Hz), the Desktop low frequency control (-4 dB at 160 Hz) for a console or desk between listener and monitor, Bass Tilt (0 to -6 dB below 800 Hz) near room boundaries and Treble Tilt (+2, -2 or -4 dB above 5 kHz). Set only one switch per group.

Intelligent Signal Sensing and the Iso-Pod stand

Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) puts the 8040B into standby below 0.5 W when no audio has been present for a while and wakes it automatically when a signal returns; it can be disabled on the rear panel. The supplied Iso-Pod (Isolation Positioner/Decoupler) stand isolates the monitor from the desk or console and tilts it so that the acoustic axis points at the listener, reducing colouration from vibration and surface reflections.

Mounting and accessories

The Iso-Pod attaches at three mounting points for vertical or symmetrical horizontal positioning. Two sets of M6x10 mm threads on the rear take wall and ceiling brackets, and an M10x10 mm thread in the base secures the monitor to its base (it is not for a microphone stand). GENELEC accessories include stands, wall, ceiling and truss mounts, a VESA adapter, a flush mount kit, a hard case and a soft carrying case.

In the box

  • 1 x GENELEC 8040B studio monitor
  • 1 x mains cable (1.8 m)
  • 1 x operating manual
  • 1 x Iso-Pod kit

GENELEC 8040B: frequently asked questions

Does the 8040B need a separate amplifier?

No. 90 W bass and 90 W treble amplifiers are built in; the only connections needed are the mains supply and a balanced line-level input.

Can I mount the 8040B on a microphone stand?

No. The thread in the base is M10, not the 3/8 in microphone stand thread. Use the Iso-Pod, a GENELEC stand or a bracket on the rear M6 threads.

How do I set the input sensitivity?

With a screwdriver on the rear panel: the input level for 100 dB SPL at 1 m is adjustable from +6 to -6 dBu; the factory setting is -6 dBu (fully clockwise).

Are the drivers magnetically shielded?

Yes. Both drivers are magnetically shielded as standard.

Where can I buy the GENELEC 8040B in India?

The GENELEC 8040B is available from Shivansh Electronics, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, with delivery across India.

Workflow 1: Stereo nearfield pair on a desk

Set up a stereo pair for mixing and editing at a desk or workstation.

Connections

ConnectTo
Audio interface or monitor controller (left / right outputs)XLR input of each monitor (balanced cables)
Iso‑Pod standsUnder each monitor, tilted towards the listener
MainsSupplied mains cables

Setup

  1. Place the monitors symmetrically, at equal distance from the listening position, with the acoustic axes aimed at ear height.
  2. Connect the balanced XLR cables first and the mains cables last.
  3. Set the room response switches for desk placement: Bass Tilt -2 dB and Desktop LF -4 dB (near field on a reflective surface).
  4. Set the input sensitivity with a screwdriver: +6 to -6 dBu for 100 dB SPL at 1 m (factory setting -6 dBu).

Tip: Keep the monitors clear of the screen and other reflecting objects; tilt them with the Iso-Pod rather than raising the desk level.

Workflow 2: Monitors near a wall or in a small room

Correct the bass build-up that walls and corners cause in compact rooms.

Connections

ConnectTo
Line‑level sourceXLR input
Room response switchesRear panel

Setup

  1. Start with all switches OFF (flat anechoic response).
  2. For placement near a wall: Bass Tilt -4 dB; in a corner also Bass Roll-Off -4 dB.
  3. Listen to well-known reference recordings or measure at the listening position.
  4. Change one setting at a time until the bass sounds even and natural.

Tip: Respect the minimum clearances behind, above and beside the monitor so the reflex port and cooling work properly.

Workflow 3: Surround and immersive monitoring

Build a 5-channel or larger system from identical monitors.
